It may be Australia's fifth year competing in the Eurovision Song Contest, but for some, it remains a mystery how we managed to get there in the first place.

there is not really a concrete reason why Australia is still in EurovisionIt appears there are only two requirements to compete — you have to be invited and you have to be part of the European Broadcasting Union , which the SBS joined in 1979, four years before it first broadcast the contest. After Sebastian's May 2015 performance, it was confirmed in November that Australia would be returning for a second go at the title in 2016.

And then in 2016, we were invited back for 2017, and the same thing happened in 2017 for 2018. You get the picture. In February, it was announced that Australia had secured a spot in Eurovision for at least five more years, until 2023. At the time, Jon Ola Sand, executive supervisor of the contest on behalf of the EBU, said:"We are delighted that Australia has become a more permanent member of the Eurovision Song Contest family.

"Australians have long been huge fans of the event with a great number of loyal viewers year on year, and when they were invited to participate in the 60th-anniversary edition of the contest, we couldn't have imagined quite how popular their artists would become. "It was a natural progression for us to agree to their inclusion as a participant for the next five years as they bring so much to the table and we very much look forward to welcoming them to Tel Aviv to perform."

I don't care why australia is still in the eurovision song contest, it is in it and it's a good thing for the country.

Can't see a problem really, our soccer teams play in Asia and contrary to some opinion we are not in Asia we are a Pacific country, the kids listen to K Pop, learn Chinese but few will ever visit there and we seem to be hooked on American TV even thought it is mindless trash.

It's been 63 years Why is Eurovision still going? 🤣

Australia will win this year!

I don't watch it anymore, most of the music is sub-standard now, it's all about the fashion and gimmicks.

Send DUNERATSS over

By participating in this silly event, helps form the view internationally that Aust is supporting Israeli apartheid, thuggery and violence against Palestinians and the thievery and ethnic cleansing of Palestine

The world needs to hear the amazingly talented and delightful kmillerheidke Eurovision Australia

The question should be why is Aust supporting Israeli apartheid, thuggery and violence against Palestinians and the thievery and ethnic cleansing of Palestine

In regards to why question, Like every european country, australia has some good singers, australia can showcase what it has in the eurovision song contest. The song contest is a good way for australia to promote itself to the over one hundred million people that watch it

Exactly.....we are part of Asia not Europe. We gotta get over our racism I reckon.

The reason Australia is still in Eurovision is because of SBS. Your article sounds like sour grapes. Everyone will be watching SBS and Kate.

who cares?

Money

I’m boycotting Eurovision this year anyway.

So we don’t have to watch election coverage on Saturday night

We really need to send TISM over there...

Who cares or follows this rubbish

Good question. We should never had agreed to participate in that farce. It's denigrating to our music industry.

Because irrelevance likes company

They want to traffic the master race over at Europe and spread alt-right traffick speech, obviously.

Sit the hell down. How about getting behind our participation instead of trying to run it down...seriously, it’s fantastic that we’re there and competing. It adds something extra to a fun weekend. And you wonder why the ABC gets such a crap rap, with rubbish like this NotMyABC

Who cares? It’s a great piece of television!

It’s a Liberal plot! I hate it!

they need us

She cant win. Its unethical. Just a guest. . But its nice to see how they always do well

With all the world class bands and song writers we have surely one of them could write a hit song instead of the embarrassing junk our entrants have to perform

This year I’m watching it because of

nazi's gota stick together?

There is a maximum currently set at 44 countries allowed to enter. This year there were 42 until Ukraine withdrew. If countries like Monaco, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Andorra, Bulgaria, and Luxembourg all wanted to return, there could be an issue for us.

Because......

A third Criteria is that you have had to have broadcast it live and complete for (I think) 3 years prior to the event.

Oz has been in Eurovision since 1770/78.

Because MPs won’t vote for Theresa May’s Brexit deal!!
