‘It is clear we have an outbreak’: Flu, common viruses make rapid comeback in NSW

Pharmacists are pushing for approval to administer flu shots to young children to help boost low uptake as influenza cases surge to almost 7000 in May and hospitalisations double in the past week.

Professor Ian Barr, deputy director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, said reported cases are likely the “tip of the iceberg” and infection numbers could be “more than 10 times” those notified on surveillance tracking databases. Cases of rhinovirus, which causes the common cold, jumped 50 per cent over the past four weeks to 3500 infections, and respiratory syncytial virus infections - commonly known as RSV - tripled in the past month with 766 cases last week.
