Pharmacists are pushing for approval to administer flu shots to young children to help boost low uptake as influenza cases surge to almost 7000 in May and hospitalisations double in the past week.
Professor Ian Barr, deputy director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, said reported cases are likely the “tip of the iceberg” and infection numbers could be “more than 10 times” those notified on surveillance tracking databases. Cases of rhinovirus, which causes the common cold, jumped 50 per cent over the past four weeks to 3500 infections, and respiratory syncytial virus infections - commonly known as RSV - tripled in the past month with 766 cases last week.
when the pandemic hit. About 7.5 per cent of children under four in NSW have received their flu jab this year. “It looks like vaccination coverage will be lowish this year. Whether we can get up to 35 per cent coverage as we did last year remains to be seen,” Barr said. “Hospital and laboratory surveillance continues to show a sharp increase in influenza activity in the community, which is earlier in the year than has been observed in previous winter influenza seasons,” the latest report said.Emergency department presentations for bronchiolitis, generally caused by RSV, have also increased with 355 presentations, jumping from 215 presentations in the previous week. More than 40 per cent of bronchiolitis presentations in the past week were admitted to hospital.
