A ground assault also has to defeat “the Gaza Metro”, Hamas’s labyrinthine tunnel network. And then it has to pave the way to peace.

“The Gaza Metro”. It would be nice to think that the Palestinian enclave of 2.3 million people had an underground public transport system. But this is, alas, a euphemism.

The tunnel network is equipped with power and communications. It also reportedly include munitions-making factories and arms dumps. Leaders can live down there, and there are rest-and-refreshment rooms for the fighters. Kings College London professor Lawrence Freedman reckons the Israeli operation could be a drawn-out process.

Meanwhile, the military may have to fight a more conventional, and more defensive, war in the north against Hezbollah. “As Gaza will never be run by a pro-Israeli politician, might as well start thinking now about who else can bring stability to the territory,” Freedman writes. But it looks a long shot. Tehran won’t like it, and will want to continue fomenting instability rather than see Iran’s fellow Muslim nations working cooperatively and constructively with Israel.
