The US military said on Wednesday that it intercepted several drones in Iraq in the past 24 hours that were threatening US military and other allied personnel there, amid rising regional tensions following the attacks in Israel. In western Iraq, US forces attacked two drones, destroying one and damaging the second, resulting in “minor injuries” to coalition troops, the military’s Central Command said in a statement.
Separately, in northern Iraq, the military destroyed one drone with no injuries, it said. The military did not say who was operating the drones. Iran-backed militias have in the past conducted drone and rocket attacks against the 2500 US troops based in Iraq. US commanders have said they are seeking to deter a wider regional war that could include US military strikes against Iranian proxies in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.
