Pet cats kill songbirds by the million, as well as other wildlife. But how much of a threat do they really pose, and should they be kept indoors?

, numbers of which have dropped by more than a third since the 1960s due to disappearing food sources, is another ground feeder and frequent cat prey. It is currently on the amber list.lthough Baker sees no evidence that cats are responsible for UK bird declines, he agrees that there is a problem worth discussing.

So should the British adopt the American way and ditch free roaming? It is possibly already happening. Though it is early days, a growing minority are keeping their cats fully indoors. And that worries Daniel Cummings from Cats Protection. “We’re not saying that all cats need to go outside,” he says, but if indoor-only became the norm, some cats “would have significantly reduced welfare”.

There may also be an idea to remove backyard fencing so that native animals can roam without barriers…. Certain kinds of grasses cannot be mowed or destroyed and definitely no pet dogs, which are the number one killer of koalas.

because it worked out so well last time you tried to interfere with nature. seriously, what is it with Australians and trying to fuck up their own ecology?

If you want your cat to roam , don't do in my area as I set traps for cats and when I catch them , they end up dead ( as I stealthfully disappear them ).

I complained .... fogged off. I bought a trap and caught it - called council ranger to take cat away .... back in under 12hrs. Was abused and threatened for my efforts. So I started putting out milk mixed with ethylene glycol ... until that cat vanished.

I had thriving colonles of frogs , lizards and a wide range of native birds visiting my garden and living in the habitat areas I'd created. Then next door neighbour brought home a kitten which grew to be come a killer, exterminating every frog , lizard and bird in 12 months.

yes .... and time to take steps to make cats extinct in Australia. Make it illegal to allow cats to breed and put a bounty on cats ( and any cat found outside fair game to be killed on sight ).

Unequivocally yes

Most birds are shit and the good birds a too smart to get eaten by cats.

Yes, they kill too much of our native wildlife should be same as dogs if they kill another animal they should be put down. Maybe then people will take responsibility for their own pets.
