Artist Josephine Jakobi, this year's major prize winner of the International Art Textile Biennale, revisits the life cycles of Victoria's Lake Tyers in her latest art installation project, Observatorium.

abc.net.au/news/josephine-jakobi-float-artist-designs-observatorium-lake-tyers/101889486It's been four years since Josephine Jakobi spent a week on board a floating art studio moored in the middle of Victoria's Lake Tyers.

Float, which is accessible only by kayak, has since hosted countless local and international artists. "What we've found with Float is that it's very much a shared habitat on this section of Lake Tyers; there are plenty of other creatures there," she said. Jakobi was the major prize winner at East Gippsland Regional Gallery's International Art Textile Biennale this year.

It is this curiosity for the intricate and microscopic, coupled with re-fashioning nature's life cycles into art, that has made Jakobi symbolic of East Gippsland's environmentally minded artist community.Jakobi, a custodian and keeper of Float, frequently returns to the boat to address cleaning and maintenance issues.Jakobi's intriguing tool case gives an insight into the curious mind of an artist.

"We've come up with an idea for building a wicking bed system, which is basically a reed bed for treating grey water," Jakobi said. The Observatorium pontoon will be decorated with sculptural totems from other artists and will feature bird shelters and other potential habitats in an effort to divert the swallows and insects from nesting in the roof, walls, and decking of the main Float vessel.

Bushcraft is Art. Its learning how to work with the nature that surrounds you so you may survive. What she's doing is called ' tinkering in your old age '. Australians would be more interested in things like the alone series. This is just crap.

She isnt homeless. So basically, an entitled old woman builds a stupid art thing and homeless Australians should look upon her in awe. Why doesnt she offer that land up for the homeless?
