The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is set to begin its 10-month journey to nudge a space rock out of its orbit. Here's what we know about the mission.

NASA's one-way mission to crash a spacecraft into an asteroid is planned to blast off tonight.

"Even though it's unlikely that an asteroid will hit us during our lifetimes, it's one of those things that can happen. It was also chosen because changes to its orbit can be observed from Earth-bound telescopes as it passes in front of its companion Didymos, causing dips in light. Released by the spacecraft about two days before impact, the Italian-made satellite will fly past the crash as it happens, taking images of how much stuff is blown off the asteroid."That impact will blast many tonnes of material off the asteroid."The "kinetic impact technique" — aka smashing into something at high speed — will give scientists an idea about how hard they have to hit an asteroid to shift its orbit.

"So over a year or a few years, that difference is enough to make the asteroid miss the Earth if it was headed for the Earth."DART is simply a test of the technique, Dr Statler says.

NASA to launch space defence systemMight be better if the Chinese did it their their technology seems faster and more advanced.😄 Why bother? At the rate we are going, human beings will kill each other by armaments, pandemics or starvation and loss of lands & clean water, and destroy the planet, before we are threatened by an asteroid ... maybe even before we get nuclear powered submarines. Pessimism much! 🇺🇸🇺🇸TRUMP2024🇺🇸🇺🇸
