The government will not appeal the Federal Court's ruling which declared the former Gillard government's live export ban illegal.

The government will not appeal the Federal Court's ruling which declared the former Gillard government's live export ban illegal. Labor introduced the blanket ban on live exports in 2011 after an ABC report showed mistreatment of Australian cattle in some Indonesian abattoirs. Attorney-General Christian Porter said "live cattle exporters were dealt with egregiously by the Gillard government” when it made the 2011 decision.

"We don’t ever want to see governments of any persuasion have the ability to make decisions like this again,” she said. Nationals Senator Matt Canavan welcomed the decision, telling Sky News “it’s certainly not about the money for most of the cattle producers, they want that justification for their livelihoods”. “They want to know that governments can’t make overnight decisions, knee-jerk decisions to shut down their livelihoods without proper reasons for doing so,” he said.

'Bright future of Black Australia' slammed by activists wallowing in historical guilt | Sky News AustraliaAcclaimed novelist Peter Carey has joined a large group of 'moral crusaders' in slamming Australia's historical treatment of Indigenous people according to Sky News host Chris Smith.\n\nSpeaking on a podcast on the topic of Australia's colonial history, Mr Carey said Australia has 'racial guilt' because of our knowledge of 'genocide'.\n\nHis comment which “shames Aussies” for not acting on their supposed guilt, was not surprising given Mr Carey’s history of indigenous activism evident in his latest novel, 'Long Way From home' which focuses on indigenous dispossession, according to Mr Smith. \n\nHowever, Mr Smith pointed out “it was not the current population who committed such crimes” and there have been numerous attempts at reconciliation by the broader Australian community. \n\n“We have returned land to aboriginal communities; we join in, with various 'acknowledgments to country' at functions everywhere; and then there's the 30 billion dollars that contributes to the lives of all indigenous people, each single year”.\n\nMr Smith said in contrast to Mr Carey's pessimism and guilt tripping, indigenous leader Warren Mundine wrote this week Black Australia has a bright future and cited government supported programs helping indigenous communities rise out of poverty. \n\n“If Warren Mundine can do that, why can't Peter Carey”. \n We are all children of today He’s doing it to sell his new book, which funnily enough about the same topic. Books don’t sell if they don’t create hype! 2019-2020 Indigenous funding is $5.2 Billion divided by 728k equals a large amount of money for each indigenous recipient

Gillard Labor govt to blame for leaving $600m bill for Aus taxpayers: Canavan | Sky News AustraliaThe government will not appeal the Federal Court's ruling which declared the former Gillard government's live export ban illegal. \n\nLabor introduced the blanket ban on live exports in 2011 after an ABC report showed the mistreatment of Australian cattle in some Indonesian abattoirs. \n\nNationals Senator Matt Canavan told Sky News it was “a great result” and “a vindication of what the hard working men and women do in our live cattle industry”. \n\n“It’s a tough industry, it’s hard country up here, but they make a buck out of it, provide a livelihood and they shouldn’t have had their livelihood shut down overnight nine years ago by the Labor government,” he said. \n\nMr Canavan said the 2011 decision “shut down a whole eco system and caused mass devastation”. \n\n“It doesn’t just involve those who were hurt directly through the shutting down of cattle sales, but people who drive trucks were put out of work, people who run helicopter mustering operations, fencing contractors, feed suppliers,” he said. \n\nA 300-strong class action is seeking an estimated $600 million in compensation for lost income due to the ban. \n\nMr Canavan blamed the Gillard Labor government for leaving a $600 million bill which Australian taxpayers would now need to pay out, but said the compensation was necessary. \n\nHe said the legal ruling was good news for Australians right across the business landscape. \n\n“This court case helps clarify for businesses in this country that governments don’t just have the unfettered right to shut you down and that’s the greatest win here for our country,” he said. mattjcan WHO .. markc01 mattjcan If the actions of Gillard/Ludwig were illegal why haven’t they been charged ? mattjcan WHY IS THAT SKYNEWS DON,T WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE SPORTS RORTS IF THIS WAS THE LABOR GOV THE ANTI LABOR MURDOCH RUN SKYNEWS MEDIA COMMENTATORS WOULD COVER THIS RORT BY SCOTT MORRISON AND HIS LNP GOV 24/7. Puh-leeese. When 2970 active cases (out of 3000+) are from one state, it's a bit misleading to imply this is an Australian problem.

High COVID welfare essentially created a ‘floor price’ in the wages market | Sky News AustraliaThe federal government’s recalibration of JobKeeper and JobSeeker recognises high rates of income support can create a deterrence for people going to look for work, according to Social Services Minister Anne Ruston.\n\nJobSeeker payments will be slashed to $815 a fortnight from September as the Coalition moves to keep COVID-19 support payments until at least the end of the year. \n\nPrime Minister Scott Morrison also announced JobKeeper support would be reduced to $1200 per fortnight towards the end of September with a lower payment of $750 for those working less than 20 hours per week.\n\nMinister Ruston said the Treasury Department’s review into JobKeeper uncovered how the payments may have provided essentially a “floor price in the wages market”.\n\n“This is preventing or stopping people looking for work,” she told Sky News host Chris Kenny.\n\n“It’s about trying to maintain a balance between the level of support that’s needed given the circumstances we find ourselves in.\n\n“But also recognising if you have high levels of support out there that are creating a deterrent for people going to work then that’s also a negative thing for the economy.”\n\nImage: Getty Anne_Ruston Written and authorised by Chris Kenny for the Australian Liberal Party, Canberra.
