A review into NSW Aboriginal child welfare finds nearly one in 10 children enter care within two weeks of birth and some newborns are being removed before mothers can even take a photo.

Nearly one in 10 Aboriginal children who entered care in the report period entered within two weeks of birth, government data showed.

In one case study, authorities knew a mother was homeless, abusing drugs and a victim of domestic violence early in her pregnancy but did not intervene to help before taking away her newborn baby. Auntie Deb Swan of the activist group Grandmothers Against Removal NSW criticised the department for not working more with mothers before they gave birth.Auntie Deb said her group welcomed the report, as unconscious bias and racism often led authorities to dismiss Aboriginal relatives as potential carers.According to the Davis"Family is Culture" review, another area needing major reform is adoption.

Professor Davis argued legislation should be changed to ensure that formal adoption"is not an option for Aboriginal children in [out-of-home care]". Tim Ireland, chief executive of the Aboriginal welfare body AbSec, called the report a"watershed moment" for the sector.

'legislation changed to ensure adoption is not an option for Aboriginal children..reasons..horrors endured by Stolen Generation and loss of culture' In other words abandon them to systemic Aboriginal community abuse and make a political career blaming whites theirabc auspol

When a government agency starts giving false and misleading evidence and continues to ignore it’s own policies and procedures I have to ask myself why the public continues to support their practises. 🙄

Once again we are putting feelings first for some whilst endangering defenceless children

One big problem & it applies universally not just to the group mentioned, it is that you can't lock a person up for being a drunk even though they could be damaging the child they are carrying. We need to be able to enforce drug & alcohol rehabilitation measures, nation wide.

Black, white or Asian if a child is being abused or neglected it will be removed from that environment. Its called saving a generation
