Millions of Indians mark the Holi festival, dancing to festive music, exchanging food and drink and smearing each other with red, green, blue and pink powder, turning the air into a joyful kaleidoscope of colour.

Holi is the Hindu festival of colours, marking the arrival of spring in India and other South Asian countries. Some Indian states are banning the use of cannabis-laced drinks and snacks which are popular with many revellers.

It also celebrates the divine love between the Hindu god Krishna and his consort Radha, and signifies a time of rebirth and rejuvenation, embracing the positive, while letting go of negative energy. Food and drink are a big part of the festivities. Vendors across India sold thandai — a traditional beverage prepared with milk and dry fruits which is sometimes laced with cannabis.Another tradition that marks Holi is bhang, a paste made by grinding the leaves of the cannabis plant. It is used in drinks and snacks.

Holi traditions vary across India, the world's second-most-populous nation, with more than 1.4 billion people.
