When Susan Hussey asked that of a black British charity boss, she echoed the words of many who alienate people of colour, says writer Kohinoor Sahota

When Susan Hussey asked that of a black British charity boss, she echoed the words of many who alienate people of colourPhotograph: Kin Cheung/APPhotograph: Kin Cheung/APhere are you from?” is a question that every person in my family has been asked, from my parents in the 1960s to my little nephew, crying on his way back from school.

The grandest invitation I ever received as a journalist was to attend an exhibition at the palace. It arrived in a small cream envelope, with my name – spelt correctly – in calligraphy. There were jokes about the “exotic” art in reference to the Asian pieces. Someone recognised one of their aristocratic ancestors in a portrait on display as if that were ordinary – it consolidated how somebody like me could never belong in the establishment.

Buckingham Palace official quits after asking Black charity boss where she was 'really from'An honorary member of Buckingham Palace has resigned and apologised after a Black charity founder said she was questioned about whether she was really British at a royal reception. Racism definitely exist at the top echelon's of society 🙄 This smells like a malicious beat'up. Are you suggesting that asking someone with familiar but not instantly recognisable accent where they're from is racist? Or an insult to ask Aussie-born ppl with Scottish/Irish/African/US accents about their heritage BBCWorld

Royal aide resigns after making racist comments to Buckingham Palace guestBuckingham Palace says a royal aide made 'unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments' to a woman at an event hosted by the Queen Consort Camilla. Not totally surprising that an 83 year old aristocrat might be a bit racially insensitive, and perhaps even a little demented. I think 'deeply regrettable comments' is a mild way to put ceaselessly hounding a Black woman about where she's REALLY from while she's there to speak about how women of colour are treated by Brittish society Imagine not having a bit of tolerance for an 83 year old, was it really that offensive?

Royal aide steps aside after making 'unacceptable' comments to guestA royal aide at Buckingham Palace has left her role after making 'unacceptable and deeply regrettable' comments about race and nationality to a woman at a grand reception, a palace spokesperson says. The charity was for women of African heritage, this is a harmless and reasonable question? Cancel culture now has hold of the royals, watch them try to appease the woke mob. . Hilarious! Aboriginals still refer to us whities as British... . Another win for the perpetually offended.

‘What part of Africa?’ Buckingham Palace household member steps down after racist comments to guestBritain’s Press Association and a number of other media outlets in Britain identified the woman who made the remarks as Lady Susan Hussey, who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s lady in waiting. And so she should, living in the past where it was acceptable to ask these questions in her 'day'. The RF must be furious.
