The NSW transport agency appreciates its construction projects can impact residents, but Noel Painton Smith and her neighbours say a major highway upgrade is damaging their homes and health.

The NSW government has been accused of failing residents who say roadworks have disrupted their lives and damaged their homes.

“Because my husband has cancer and I have been diagnosed with lupus, the vibrations were affecting our health in very negative ways,” she said. “We were both experiencing headaches, dizziness and general malaise.”But concern turned to alarm after underground drilling caused subsidence in several properties, potentially making homes unstable.

However, they said their concerns about the stability of their home had not been taken seriously by Abergeldie and Transport for NSW. Complaints about the roadworks’ impact, meanwhile, prompted the transport agency to offer Painton Smith and Wansey up to $700 a week to live elsewhere. “There was no way I could find a reasonable place to live in with my pets,” she said. “Nor could I afford to run and maintain two houses even if, as a single working older woman, I had the capacity.”
