As a front-runner candidate in the lead-up to the Eden-Monaro by-election, Labor’s Kristy McBain says she is focused on providing “a real tangible plan for the future”.

Pre-polling has been in place for two weeks in the rural seat vacated by Labor’s Dr Mike Kelly, with Labor candidate Kristy McBain and Liberal candidate Fiona Kotvojs in a virtual tie leading up to the election on Saturday.

“I live in this region, I love this region, I’ll do whatever I can to put the people of this region first,” she told Sky News host Chris Smith. “As Mayor of Bega Valley I’ve worked with politicians on every side and I’ve worked with different levels of government to get things done for our community”. She said she was committed to tackling the future of jobs in the region which have taken a hit due to the twin impacts of the bushfires and the coronavirus pandemic.

Labor accuses the PM of 'politicising' border issue | Sky News AustraliaThe Prime Minister needs to stop playing 'silly politics' over border control and instead focus on stopping any further COVID-19 outbreak, according to Shadow Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones.\n\nThe comments come after Annastacia Palaszczuk criticised the prime minister and other federal politicians for targetting Queensland amid ongoing border battles. \n\n“We are the first eastern state to open up our economy, faster than New South Wales and faster than Victoria,” she told Sky News on Wednesday.\n\n“Queensland was unfairly singled out constantly by senior federal ministers over a long period of time, that is extremely disappointing.' \n\n“Not Tasmania, not South Australia, occasionally Western Australia, but Queensland was singled out. \n\n“I have stayed silent for a long period of time.” \n\nMr Jones told Sky News Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been very critical of Queensland, which is run by a Labor government, but not South Australia, with is governed by the Liberal Party.\n\n'If we are going to get cooperation, if we are going to get the right sort of outcomes on a health basis, we have to take the silly politics out of it,'he said.\n\nThis pandemic is far from beaten.'\n StephenJonesMP StephenJonesMP StephenJonesMP

Labor calls on PM to be 'compassionate' with JobSeeker | Sky News AustraliaLabor is calling on the Morrison government to extend its JobSeeker subsidy scheme and permanently increase the allowance as many Australians remain unemployed. \n\nShadow Finance Minister Katy Gallagher said the JobSeeker and JobKeeper schemes were due to end in about three months and “people are genuinely worried”.\n\nShe told Sky News the payment “has to be increased'. \n\n'The government should be compassionate and make sure what they land on is enough for people to not only support their day-to-day living, but also support them in a dignified life,' she said. \n\n“We cannot govern from opposition but we want the government to take this seriously and I think any idea of a snapback everyone acknowledges is ridiculous and the sooner the government provides some certainty about that, the better it will be for people. \n\n“We’re not being prescriptive, we’re not demanding a certain figure from the government at this stage – but we are giving them a framework.' \n\nImage: News Corp Australia Following a pandemic and with the number of jobs being lost, compassion with JobSeeker & maintaining the allowance amount seems reasonable. Scaling the allowance & reducing the amount by 50% for each year unemployed also seems fair and reasonable. Labor are idiots. The enhanced support is already meaning people are just not applying for jobs as it's not worth their effort to do so... Typical Labor, borrow more and give away for votes.... money doesn’t grow on trees...
