This nightmarish scene was not unfolding on a disconnected station or in a tiny outback town, it was happening at a suburban Queensland home just eight minutes from a shopping centre.Mr and Mrs Milroy are among hundreds of families living without phone reception in Logan, Queensland's fourth-largest local government area.

Mr Milroy said he makes Wi-Fi calls over the "dodgy NBN connection" to run his earthmoving business, but he still drives to the corner store for important conversations.
