The co-managers of the resort said they could feel the embers coming as they took shelter with staff in a fire bunker.

"Basically everything was white. White ash, but fine powdered ash and smouldering sticks, basically, little Mallee trees that had been there that had been reduced to black sticks sticking out of the ground," he said.Staff were then led from the bunker to safety by a small firefighting tank on a ute."While we were in the bunker, we thought, 'we'll be up in the bar in a minute. We'll have a few drinks and talk about our experience'," she said.

Mr Hird said he was thankful staff were safe and had been finding them alternative work and repatriating their belongings from the island."A lot of the staff village survived … and now we're looking towards the rebuilding of Southern Ocean Lodge, which is all going to be subject to a number of things including commercially viable insurance premiums," he said."We are absolutely shocked and saddened by today's events," the pair said in a statement earlier this year.
