Tennis star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the US Open, saying his decision was made out of respect for his fellow Australians and the huge numbers of Americans who have died from COVID-19

.

In a video posted to the Uninterrupted social media account created by LeBron James, Kyrgios said the choice to not play in the US Open next month was a painful one but necessary for him in the current pandemic.calling out some tennis professionals for acting selfishly during the coronavirus shutdown

, said he didn’t begrudge the US Open organisers for putting on the tournament and restoring jobs, and he wished players well who decide to play. But Kyrgios also took a few more swipes at a ‘selfish’ group of players who either contracted coronavirus or were exposed to it at a tournament and post-tournament party put on by Novak Djokovic in Serbia and Croatia in June, and in the case of“Let’s take a breath here and remember what’s important, which is health and safety as a community. We can re-build our sport and the economy but we can never recover lives lost,” Kyrgios said.

“I have got no problem with the USTA putting on the US Open and if players want to go, that’s up to them, so long as everyone acts appropriately and acts safely. No-one wants people to keep their jobs more than me. I am speaking for the guy who works in the restaurants, the cleaners and the locker room attendants. These are the people who need their jobs back the most and fair play to them.

Another winging passive aggressive illiterate sports person

Why is he always so critical

bullshit

I don't know if any of you people posting have seen Nick's behaviour in the past 6 months, but it's improved dramatically. I watched him in Brisbane at the ATP Cup and he was exemplary. Try to at least show him a bi of support.

Seriously?

NickKyrgios good on ya buddy. look, these are tough times and we all need to reset expectations. Once this is all done, and you’ll give us your best tennis ever!

If he is in Australia he should not be allowed to leave as I am not. He can apply for Jobkeeper smh SMHsport auspol usopen COVID19Aus COVID19au COVID19

Who cares. The pussy was only going to make up the numbers anyway. It’s not like he was ever going to win, or even make it through to the semis. He’s a mediocre player who tries to make up for that by drawing attention to himself in other ways. Good riddance.

Well done Nick.

He is Australian and all Australians are not allowed to leave Australia australia

Good on him for setting a good example this time.

Sure Nick!

Coming from the guy who has rarely showed respect for the game of tennis....Cincinnati ‘worst ref ever’ etc.

NickKyrgios well done 👍🏻 I think it’s the right thing to do.

I’m sure they’ll really miss the No. 40 ranked player!!! 🙄

US Congress fails to extend $840 coronavirus payment, plunging millions into more economic hardshipJobless Americans are set to become poorer when extra unemployment payments expire, after Congress failed to reach a deal on extending the benefits even as the US economy deteriorates. Yeah because welfare always makes people 'rich,' lol. I guess you would think this wouldn't you, parasites. The simplicity of political process in America is something to be admired. Left and right never agree. Middle gets screwed. Brilliant!
