Hurricane Ian is continuing its path of destruction over Florida, uprooting powerlines, inundating and trapping people in their homes, while draining entire bays of water.
Tampa Police Department captured the moment the storm, one of the most powerful recorded in the US, ripped a traffic light down and sent it crashing towards a police car. "Tampa PD Officers saw a traffic light come crashing down in front of their car in Ybor City," the department wrote on Twitter.The storm has now weakened to a Category 3, hours after touching down as a Category 4 along the southwestern coast of Florida near Cayo Costa. As of 8:00 PM EDT Wed Sep 28 the center of Ian was located above Desoto County with maximum sustained winds of about 185kph.However officials are warning people to stay inside as the worst of the storm is not yet over.
Tampa Bay has been entirely drained of water and authorities are imploring residents not to go sight-seeing.Curious sightseers walk in the receding waters of Tampa Bay in Florida due to the low tide and tremendous winds from Hurricane Ian. "Officers are continuously clearing cars from Bayshore Blvd due to people coming out to see or walk on the the low tide," officials wrote.A coastal sheriff's office said they've received reports of people trapped inside their homes and high-water rescues are underway.A major disaster declaration has been issued for all 67 counties in the state and 42,000 lineman, 7000 National Guardsman and 179 aircraft have already been deployed to help.
