Even now, after all of the medals and awards and records left in her wake, Emma McKeon struggles to consider herself to be in the same company as names such as Ian Thorpe or Michael Phelps, enduring icons of the Olympic pool.

Emma McKeon with her 50m freestyle gold from Tokyo, one of a record seven medals she claimed in the Olympic pool.So it comes as no surprise that McKeon is still coming to terms with another honour after she was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her services to swimming on the back of a Tokyo Olympics in which she emerged from the shadows to become the ultimate racing machine.

“It’s still all a bit hard to digest. Reaching those heights, winning all those medals, it’s something I never really thought about it much leading in to Tokyo. It’s something I might have dreamed about as a kid but that’s about it,” McKeon said. “I don’t really see myself like that, so when I get these sort of awards, that’s what makes it more real for me and helps me realise what I’ve achieved.”
