Swimming athletes 'robbed' of chance to represent their country: Alan Jones | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Alan Jones says Swimming Australia put 'medals and money' before the athlete with their 'brutal' Olympic selection criteria.\n\n'You don't have to know anything about swimming to know these are Olympic trials and the Olympic movement set qualifying standards – but that doesn't suit the bureaucrats at Swimming Australia,' Mr Jones said.\n\n'They say it doesn't matter if you meet that standard.\n\n'They didn't swim a time that might have seen them to a final in the 2019 World Championships.\n\n'America has the best swimmers in the world and a massive population. They don't come at this nonsense.\n\n'But, of course, for us, it is about money.\n\n'Set a higher standard beyond Olympics qualifying, fewer swimmers make it, it's cheaper.\n\n'Medals and money before the athlete, robbing them of a chance to represent their country.\n\n'These athletes are being treated like rubbish. Disposable. \n\n'They are unpaid, they make phenomenal sacrifices, they bust their guts to meet the Olympic qualifying standard.\n\n'Take the money away from swimming officials who are handsomely paid – give it to the athletes.'\n 1 You are talking shit - again! The swimmers know the standards they need to reach before the trials. They either rise to those standards or they don’t go. It encourages strong competition and outstanding performance. We then get the very best at the olympics. 2. The olympics are not a charity event. It is a competition for all the BEST athletes in the world. Our selection criteria ensure that our very best go. The swimmers know this! Finish top 2 and meet the time, or don’t get selected. It means our team will be highly competitive 3. Finally, just to make you look totally stupid Jones, Matt Wilson did get picked and will be going to Tokyo. I look forward to seeing our fabulous swimmers competing on the world stage, and doing us proud. There is a lot to be excited about, as it is a very strong team.
