A mass search began at about 5.45pm on Thursday, after police received reports the kayak was drifting about 80 metres from the Rapid Bay shore between the town’s caravan park and jetty.Operations halted overnight but recommenced on Friday morning with the Police Water Operations Unit — comprising of local police, a police helicopter, SES crews and Sea Rescue volunteers — searching for the man.

After mass attempts to find the man, he contacted police at about 1 pm on Friday saying he was the owner of the kayak and explained that he fell into the water yesterday afternoon.
Because he couldn’t get back into it or tow it back to land, he had decided to abandon it and swam to shore before driving home.
