Fines of up to $1000 will be issued to motorists caught out by the world-first cameras, operational from Wednesday this week.

The cameras, already in use in New South Wales, are focused on reducing the concerning number of accidents caused by distracted drivers.

Two cameras will be in operation in each of Victoria and Queensland but will be shifted around the suburbs. “The trial – which begins this Wednesday, July 29 – will ensure the technology operates accurately and is appropriate for use on Victorian roads before a potential rollout,” Victoria Roads said in a statement.

“Research shows drivers who use a mobile phone while driving are four times more likely to cause a fatal road accident.

Remember when the onus was on the law enforcement to prove the offence? Well now the law has been changed to put the onus on the driver to prove their innocence. It is a big change in the law and it’s just enacted like it was nothing major.

Safety first definitely but this is a big revenue spinner, stay safe everybody 😷
