The spectacular “Devil Comet” is heading towards Earth, and most stargazers who miss the rare celestial event will not get another chance to witness it in their lifetimes. A glimpse with the naked eye will only be possible for a brief period in Australian skies. This is precisely when and how to catch the rare comet at its brightest. Comet 12/P Pons-Brooks, as the comet is formally known, was discovered in the late 1800s, and orbits the Earth once every 71 years.

As it gets closer and closer to the sun, these outbursts because it heats up more, and you get a build-up of pressure, so you get more of these eruptions.” He described comets as being “like cats” because you never know what they’ll do — and telescopic images of the Devil Comet’s recent orbit show just how varied it can appear.
