Former deputy prime minister Michael McCormack says he was trying not to be disrespectful when he drank a whole bowl of kava and had to be taken to hospital,Mr McCormack became ill on Wednesday during a visit to the Federated States of Micronesia with Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Pacific Minister Pat Conroy, opposition foreign affairs spokesman Simon Birmingham and Australian officials.As is customary, the delegation was welcomed by a traditional ceremony, which includes drinking kava.
Former deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack is led away after falling ill after drinking a bowl of strong kava.Exhaustion may also have been a factor: the day before he left for the Pacific trip, Mr McCormack had returned from a visit to Kenya as part of a Save the Children delegation.Mr McCormack was taken to hospital for tests and observation before spending the night at the ambassador’s residence.
Mr McCormack said he would continue to drink kava when visiting the Pacific, “but if I’m up north, I’ll be just taking a sip as Penny sensibly did”.
