The family and police had been told the patient was discharged from hospital. Six days later, they found him in the same hospital's morgue.

Geelong's University Hospital is under fire after reportedly telling the dead man's family and police that he was alive and had been discharged, sparking a lengthy search.

An administrative blunder at a Geelong hospital prompted a desperate six-day search for a missing man - but he was in a morgue the entire time. The day after the incident the cafe owner phoned the hospital to check on his customer's health and was told by Barwon Health, which oversees the hospital, that the man had been discharged.

"As the case was an unexpected death and the relatives could not be contacted the matter was referred to the coroner."The man was transferred to the coroner’s mortuary in Southbank, Melbourne, the day after his death. The radio station reported the hospital was called five times, including three times by police, to confirm the man had been discharged.

"We are trying to give the family as much information as we can from our side of things," Mr Ashton said. "I’ve asked my department to contact Barwon Health as a matter of urgency to seek some explanation about these very serious allegations," Ms Mikakos said.

But we he still alive?

And here's me telling my international friends we have good hospitals here! Utterly incompetent. I expect a significant number of sackings over this monumental failure.

It's a mistake the rest of us can laugh at.
