A major hospital in NSW is sending sexual assault victims to another hospital an hour away, sometimes by taxi, because of an inability to provide forensic testing.

A New South Wales hospital that does not administer rape tests is sending victims of sexual assault to another hospital located an hour away — in a taxi.Victims needing a 'rape test' are advised to travel to Wollongong Hospital, one hour northVictims in Griffith, in the state's south-west, travelling up to four hours for testing

The employee said only children who say they have been sexually assaulted are seen by a qualified, forensic medical examiner. "Traditionally a woman can present to the hospital and they will then be advised that there is not the appropriate collection space or forensic space available [to perform the test]," the employee said.

In New South Wales, a 'rape kit' is used by a practitioner at most public hospitals to collect evidence in a bid to identify a perpetrator ahead of potential legal proceedings.
