The state budget has taken a huge hit from Sydney's property downturn | MattWadeSMH

The NSW government has been forced to slash more than $9 billion from expected property-related stamp duty within the past nine months as Sydney’s prolonged housing slump drags on the state’s budget and economy.prepared independently by NSW Treasury reveals the budget surplus for this financial year has been cut by $273 million compared with what was forecast less than three months ago.

The latest budget update said risks to the state’s economic outlook “appear to have tilted more to the downside” since late last year. Global factors including “rising political tensions, policy uncertainty, financial market volatility and hikes in trade tariffs” have also clouded the state’s economic outlook.
