The number of children currently in youth detention in Tasmania is the highest it's been in a decade, and low staffing levels means those at the centre are increasingly being left in isolation.

The number of children currently in youth detention is the highest it's been in a decade, Tasmania's children commissioner has said. As of today, there are 24 children in the centre.

Commissioner Leanne McLean said there were 26 children held at Ashley Youth Detention Centre in the state's north at the start of the week, which was unacceptable. Ms McLean said there are currently 24 children at the youth detention centre, all but four were on remand. Greens leader Rosalie Woodruff said she was "horrified" to hear of the number of children currently detained."There is no opportunity for therapeutic intervention."

"The staffing situation at Ashley has been such that we've relied on the isolation of children to be able to operate the centre in a safe way," Ms McLean said.Limited staff on any given day at the facility has come to dictate how long children could spend out of their cells, Ms McLean said. "We'll continue to work with all parties involved in that system to reduce the number of young people who end up in detention."
