If you are heading on a road trip this summer, you might drive past several ancient sentinels of Australia's volcanic past. Just how these volcanoes formed away from the edge of a tectonic plate is a mystery, but scientists have come up with a new theory.

But most volcanoes in Australia were not created this way, Dr Mather said.

"[Our mechanism] can apply to volcanoes from the southern tip of Tasmania all the way up to northern Queensland," Dr Mather said. "So occasionally that volatile cocktail gets released and that percolates to the surface in the form of volcanoes."The team found peaks in volcanic activity over the past 2 million to 20 million years coincided with fluxes of movement along the Tonga-Kermadec Trench in the Pacific Ocean to the east.
