Fetal alcohol specialists say the syndrome has become a hidden epidemic, with the number of children affected now believed to outnumber those diagnosed with autism and cerebral palsy.

Ms Amos said a study carried out by leading medical researchers from London in 2015 showed the prevalence of FASD in Australia was now considered to be higher than many other common childhood diagnoses. The Caloundra FASD Clinic has helped launch a podcast series called Pregnancy and Alcohol: The Surprising Reality to raise awareness of the syndrome's prevalence.
