ABC Upper Hunter Breakfast presenter Mike Pritchard is currently the broadcaster's longest-serving rural reporter and at the age of 70 is in no rush to retire.

Growing up on a dairy farm proved the perfect preparation for Mike Pritchard's future career as a breakfast presenter on ABC regional radio in NSW.

In December, ABC Rural celebrates 75 years and 70-year-old Mike Pritchard is currently the organisation's longest-serving rural reporter. "This is a very diverse region and you cover everything rural, from farming to grape growing to the resources sector and then everything in between," he says. "He's a thorough gentleman, an exceptional person and a bit of an icon in the Upper Hunter and the Hunter."Pam still works five days a week running a bike shop in town and has her finger on the pulse.

"He's a good interviewer and he picks good people to interview, never has anyone silly on or smart asses and you never say 'oh, how boring', or 'not that again'.After some tough years of drought, the Upper Hunter has enjoyed good rainfall this year, which has lifted spirits.Fellow ABC broadcaster Philip Adams, who has a farm in the Upper Hunter, is a good friend and loyal listener who has known Mike Pritchard for decades.

Mike Pritchard has covered a lot of stories over three decades. One of the enduring and toughest is the impact of drought. Pritchard was keen to follow in his dad's footsteps but severe drought in the mid-60s dashed his dreams.Unable to find a farming job, he secured a position as a compositor on the local newspaper in Parkes.

For most of the three decades since, it's been just Mike and a News reporter in the bureau, mostly young journalists who he trained in the craft."When I started in 1990, I had a week's training in Newcastle then one day with a tech on the workings of the Muswellbrook studio, set up in an old baby health centre the ABC bought — then I was on my own, presenting a Radio National rural program into the Newcastle region and on air with the Breakfast program," he recalls.

Reserve Bank staff slam 'ridiculous' ABC reporting on house price crash fearsThe top brass at Australia's central bank hit back at ABC reporting that exposed how the dire view of the housing market held by some Reserve Bank staff clashed with the rosy picture the bank's representatives presented in public. Well they are probably correct. ABC's ASIO corridor visit was just as absurd and not worthy of decent journalism and social value. Why does the ABC want to spread potentially destabilising disinformation? What’s its agenda? Sorry, rhetorical question. Time to defund this Leftie swamp DefundTheirABC
