According to the Macquarie Dictionary, the phrase is derogatory and refers to the language of those deemed to be primitive savages.The ABC says neither it nor the show's creators were aware of the term's offensiveness prior to broadcast. The scriptwriters did not believe it was a word at all and only included it as part of a storyline about rhyming slang.
Macquarie Dictionary senior editor Victoria Morgan said the exact origin of "ooga booga" was unknown. However, the term seems to have been popularised via Hollywood films in the 1930s and 1940s.," Ms Morgan said. "A lot of the actors from traditional cultures are represented extremely tribally, running around with spears and this sort of unintelligible language saying, 'ooga booga'."It's considered extremely derogatory.
