Rugby league guru Phil Gould has launched a ferocious attack on the NRL in the wake of theGould says it's "a farce" and "ludicrous" that NRL players with development contracts aren't allowed to make their first-grade debut until 10 rounds have passed in the season. Those comments were made after the Eels were forced to upgrade Jakob Arthur onto a top-30 deal to make him eligible to play for Parramatta in Magic Round on Sunday.
"It's a farce, it's an absolute farce, it's a farce, the whole contracting model is a farce, absolute farce," Gould told Mat Thompson on Wide World of Sports'"There is no one at the league - no one at the league - with any experience in clubland or developing rosters or coaching first-grade football teams.
"It is the most ludicrous of rules and it is the most ludicrous of contracting systems. The whole thing needs to be blown up."
NRL PhilGould15 - is there not a duty of care point here? I know clubs have that duty but some safeguards make sense before clubs can call on a junior (or a second grader), to avoid serious injury and ruining the career of a junior early on.
