A bleak reality is bubbling beneath the surface in Tokyo, with local experts worried the 2021 Games will result in disaster.

The Japanese city, home to some 37 million people, has been backhanded by the cruel reality of the worldwide pandemic.

Hosting the entire world is no small feat. Billions of dollars, planning committees and gigantic construction projects are required to put on a smooth Olympics worthy of future highlight reels. London paid $14.6 billion to host the 2012 Olympics, plonking $4.4 billion of that bill on taxpayers.for the city’s Olympic infrastructure to grow weeds, turning the picturesque landscape we saw on television screens into somewhat of a graveyard.

“We are also witnessing that the so-called Olympic ‘bubble’ isn’t working. I’m appalled. Tokyo 2020 threatens lives here by spreading the virus and by sucking up public resources we desperately need to recover from the pandemic and other natural disasters that occur so regularly here.”Just 22 per cent of Japan believes the Olympics should be taking place right now. IOC President Thomas Bach has promised there is “zero” risk of athletes producing a superspreader event.

“The IOC, will never abandon the athletes, and with the cancellation, we would have lost a whole generation of athletes. So therefore, a cancellation for us was not really an option,” Bach said.
