Shadow Treasurer JEChalmers says the government got into Jobkeeper “too slowly and too narrowly” and the risk now is withdrawing it “too quickly and too bluntly which must be avoided at all costs'.

Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the government got into Jobkeeper “too slowly and too narrowly” and the risk now is withdrawing it “too quickly and too bluntly which must be avoided at all costs". “If the government continues to get these big calls wrong, whether it be the bungles with JobKeeper or robodebt, then that will cost jobs in the Australian community,” Mr Chalmers told Sky News.

This comes as hundreds of thousands of Australians issued with "robodebt" notices will soon be contacted and repaid by the government after it conceded the scheme was unlawful. The government will refund $721 million worth of debt to almost 400,000 Australians, with repayments beginning from July. “It will mean the downturn is deeper than it needs to be and the recovery will be that much harder,” he said.

NSW govt dealing 'unfairly with the bush' | Sky News AustraliaShooters, Fishers and Farmers party leader Robert Borsak says his party is not prepared to support the government’s proposed wage freeze for public sector workers. \n\nNSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian defended the move which could see up to 400,000 public workers undergo a wage freeze in a bid to stimulate the economy amid the coronavirus crisis. \n\nMr Borsak told Sky News that the party was “not convinced [government] would deal fairly with the bush”. \n\n“We weren’t convinced that creating jobs in Sydney by making these cuts would be better than allowing the public servants living in the bush to spend the money in the communities where the cash can be circulated and is needed,” he said. \n\n“Any money that’s spent by government in these circumstances has got to be seen to be stimulus money, that’s what it’s all about and taking that money to the centre, as the treasurer wants to do, I don’t think that actually conforms.\n\n“Government doesn’t create jobs, demand creates jobs and that’s what we want to see happen.” \n

Govt energy policy producing 'emissions reduction trifecta' | Sky News AustraliaEnergy Minister Angus Taylor says Australia is getting the 'trifecta' of lower gas prices, lower electricity prices and lower emissions as a result of the government's investment in 'technology not taxes'.\n\nThe latest data revealed Australia's emissions had decreased by 0.9 per cent, but factored COVID-19 and drought as contributors to the reduction. \n\n'The critical thing you see in the data is domestic emissions have been falling rapidly and for a long while. In fact, we've already beaten our 2030 target,' Mr Taylor said.\n\nMr Taylor ruled out increasing Australia's Paris targets arguing the existing target was 'strong' and would be beaten by '411 million tonnes'.\n\n'That's essentially a year's worth of emissions. We set a target and we beat it.'\n\n'We think gas is an important part of the mix. Despite the US leaving the Paris Agreement, their emissions are coming down rapidly and that's because of gas.'\n\nImage: News Corp Australia\n\n AngusTaylorMP we have so much gas in this country, how is it they run this 'energy market' scheme and drive prices up when there is no shortage? essential services should be regulated and run as a benefit to society. also emissions have been going up from our coal AND gas producers. AngusTaylorMP Emissions? Who is measuring all the volcanoes, including those unknown undersea? What a load of croc. By all means live a waste free, anti consumption life but to these big $making dirty ‘green’ industries don’t be impoverishing all of us! Thanks AngusTaylorMP What a load of bullshit. Electricity and gas prices have not gone down. Even when the wholesale price has dropped, the retail price hasn't, and with some retailers it has even risen under Taylor. He is a compulsive liar, but scarily seems to believe his own lies, bloody grub.

Rolling back government financial support 'completely untenable' for small business | Sky News AustraliaLabor frontbencher Stephen Jones says it is “completely untenable” for the government to roll back all its financial support schemes as businesses would undergo an “almighty crash”. \n\nThe Reserve Bank has appealed to the government to extend its Jobseeker and JobKeeper payments beyond the September deadline, as well as push for a plan to guide businesses out of the loan deferral scheme. \n\nMr Jones told Sky News that small businesses alone had accrued $60 billion worth of loan deferrals. \n\nHe said if businesses were forced to pay all deferred fees and loans at once “they are simply going to close the door, throw their hands in the air and say to their workers ‘sorry we can’t keep you on’”. \n\n'Banks are going to have to have some certainty from the government what sort of support is going to be available to some of those industries ,” he said. \n\n“If we can save a viable business and if we can ensure a viable business has a plan to get out of the crisis then we should do everything we can to ensure that we do that. \n\n“It’s worth the effort, it’s worth the investment to have government working together with the banking a sector and the small business sector to put in place an integrated package.” \n\nImage: Getty \n
