Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Nick Coatsworth says the government has the capacity to expand the number of ventilated intensive care beds from 2,200 to 4,400 to cope with the spread of the coronavirus.

Mr Coatsworth confirmed the fabrication of 500 ventilators that would be supported by 5,000 non-invasive ventilators that would be delivered by the end of April. He urged Australians to remain vigilant in adhering to government restrictions despite Australia having lower fatality and transmission rates than other infected countries.

The nation’s hospital systems have been “under an incredible strain at the moment looking at a wave that is crossing other health care systems in a way that we couldn’t imagine,” he said. “Dual idea of containment and capacity has been in progress concurrently.

How many people make it once placed on to a ventilator? They are very sick people. I have read as few as 10% & 50% survive being ventilated. This ignores the people that are not ventilated.
