Australian universities are not doing enough to combat the influence of China's ruling Communist Party, a group of Federal Government backbenchers warns.

"[There is a] reluctance in their administrations to defend the rights of non-CCP [Chinese Communist Party]-aligned students who dare to speak out against Beijing," she said.

Protests and violent clashes in Hong Kong have spilled over onto Australian university campuses, revealing a deep division of opinions in the local Chinese community. "But I must say, the engagement I have had with the sector, they understand how important this is that we get it right."

I’d love to see any tangible evidence of the Chinese Govt influencing universities. Are unis silencing individuals (students/researchers) from voicing opinions? Is research on the subject overlooked? Perhaps, but without evidence, these comments are just inflating a narrative.

What do they expect?! They 've sucked from the benefit of corrupt Chinese communist money for years. Looked the other way whilst organized crime funds have entered the markets; feeding human rights' abuses against expat Chinese and Australians alike; too gutless to call it out.

This is a big problem. International students are meant to promote diversity and generate supplementary revenue and not dominate. I am lucky to be enrolled at Swinburne where diversity is still a thing

That would be the same universities which refused to set up Schools for the study of Western Civilisation.

Asleep at the wheel again.

The Chinese gov should have NO influence on our Universities or anything else Australian for that matter. Trade and trade only.

So they should be

Why is it so hard to believe that Chinese people genuinely love their own country? Why is it so hard to believe that the pro China protests are spontaneous? Since when you can’t love your own country without being labelled brain-washed, naive or influenced?

Let’s see some serious action on this then!!!

Wat?...Both sides of the Government during their times in power couldn't see the influence for the $ signs in their eyes nor listen to the voices yelling about it many times! No good whinging about it now! 👎

Do something about then! 😡

As opposed to Government MPs lack of intellectual ability to influence Australian Universities.

Shutting the gate after the horse has bolted.

Why exactly are they studying here?

There are times a cliche or two should be said: 'Shut the gate the horse has bolted!' 'Here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!'

It's not just universities. At some state and independent primary schools, signs around the schools are in Chinese as well as English and the Chinese parents buy up all the houses in the vicinity of the schools and only speak to each other and only in Chinese.

What is of concern is the fact ASIS and the AFP have known about this for years and done absolutely nothing.

Step in and stop this before it is too late. You as an Australian won’t get away with that in China.

This shit has been going on for years. Straya is a lost cause, we are owned by China and our Gov't doesn't even know they sold it to them. Turns out they've been buying us bit by bit, they have prime land, some education institutions and soon they'll by our health data.

China alarmed over Australian and American influence at Hong Kong protests.

our unis r too dependent on Chinese students They treat it as a cash cow They r fighting like dogs with other unis for foreign students They lower entry standards just to catch any students even if they dont speak Eng Now we r embroiled in China politic

Need to Demonize the yellow man

Only US regime narratives are allowed

so recently I saw 'suprise MOM on mothers day' from the local shops, and I am fairly sure kids are calling bikkies 'cookies', rubbish 'garbage' and dont get me started on halloween, how about talking about foreign influence in primary schools or earlier ;)

Ya bloody happy now!!! Now u done it, u guys the mainstream mockingbird media has successfully fuel the fire abroad and here! Well bloody done! Good on YAs, now we Just got usher into the Cold War, we good u bad thing!!! U think we very sane? We approved our official liars’ wars

Add it to the long list of Chinese influence

So they should be. Only woken up to it now! 9NewsAUS 7NewsAustralia

Well that’s just got to be Labor’s fault

They control the wharfs, the shipping lanes and the Sth China Sea, not to mention all the products manufactured in China (90% of everything we own). What's wrong with handing control of the Australian education system to them as well

Government's have been asleep at the wheel!!!!

It’s a bit late to take “foreign influences” seriously when the money has been propping up institutions and politicians for decades

So when the LNP sold out the Universities to the highest bidder this didn’t occur to them. This is the sad reality of the LNP IQ.

Why should they be alarmed when West been doing it for ages

I'm frankly more concerned by the Christian Union, and other external Christian groups insidiously worming their way into my university, to try and indoctrinate students. The only reason the Watchtower has to get into a university is to get people OUT of it.

shows how pathetically out of touch these overpaid puppets are

Why the surprise. Australias policies enabled it.

Well how about limiting the TOTAL number in Oz to only 10,000. They will pay the same amount but the influence will be less.

Another sick retorics against China. No one complain in collecting millions in students fees for educating Chinise students in Australia 🇦🇺.

. . . yet remain blithely unconcerned by political donation sources

Why are they alarmed, the L&NP Govts invited them in. What were they thinking China was going to benign?

Australian Survivor 'incredibly white' says hostJonathan LaPaglia agrees with fan criticisms that the Australian Survivor cast has repeatedly failed to reflect the diversity of the Australian population. Maybe that's because people of other ethnicities have more self esteem and don't need to be attention whores? I mean makes sense that it’d be mostly white ppl applying for survivor. I like that John spoke his mind on this. It’s something I kno a lot of ppl I talk to were thinking. They could solve this 'problem' by sacking the incredibly white host.

Award-winning children's book author and collage artist wants kids to stop copying, start experimentingNow Australian author Jeannie Baker wants you to make your own — but not like you think. Rubbish. Copying is and always has been the only way to learn technique and confirm one's ability. 'Experimenting' i.e. blindly playing with art materials, is what those devoid of talent do. Moreover, roughly 1 in 10 people can be taught to draw accurately from life. Less than one in a million have any comprehension of colour technique. It's encouraging to see from the Young Archies that kids are at least getting some idea of it from video games. Further, incompetent fools routinely win art prizes and 'awards' (because they're judged by pompous idiots) and deprive the genuinely capable of a living.
