Four Liberal MPs have warned that the Chinese Communist Party holds too much influence over Australian universities, adding their voices to a growing chorus of federal politicians looking to reassess the government's China strategy

after he participated in a pro-democracy Hong Kong protest in Brisbane.

Victorian senator James Paterson said recent restlessness in Hong Kong had shone a spotlight on the foreign influence risks at Australian universities. The four Liberals join Andrew Hastie, chairman of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, who recently argued "choices will be made for us" unless Australia revisited its approach to China.

"We are proud of the contribution our international students make to the academic and cultural life of the university, including our students from China," a spokeswoman said.

Why only uni..they influence us on every commodity we use...

Please sent them back to where they’re come from

Wait - our government has an actual *strategy* about something?

There is merit in this. Universities are dependent on international students for funding. This was always going to happen. Governments need to step up funding for universities to provide the essential academic independence to maintan standards.

Australia needs to do more to quell China and help save Hong Kong

They The Chinese are also mindful of the fact there are only about 24 million Australians.

nyunggai First step is to close down all Confucius Institutes that masquerade as places of learning when in fact that are pumps for CCP propaganda. Then investigate visiting and permanent Mainland Chinese professors and deport all that are proven to have relationships with the CCP.

If they don't agree with the Australian way....leave and go home back to their own country and continue to carry on there...if Australians behaved like this in another country we would be laughed at and punished...

Plz also ask Gov to stop selling iron & LNG to China, sounds more fun

Australia is Australia! Why cant imigrants accept who we are, what we stand for & give us respect we give them and stop changing Australia to how they want.l feel so disrespected and walking on eggshells in my own country in fear of offending imagrants who are so God dam RUDE.

Why do Chinese students even come to Australia to study. Aren’t there any or enough universities in China?

Firstly visas for such students needs to include requirements not to participate in any activities in sport of or in protest of any political party or country. Secondly our Universities need to drop all indirect funding from or on behalf of any other country.

nyunggai This, while drkerrynphelps pushes Nazi comparisons against Australia. Maybe she should investigate the experiences of Uighur Muslims and Falun Dafa members

No shit. They are now paying protesters!

auspol ScottMorrisonMP govt need to buy back our food bowl that is in the hands of China. All that food goes OS to China mainland

Too right

nyunggai So our government takes $35 billion in money from Chinese students and expects they won't want anything in return?

China want every country to not get involved in their HK . Yet China seems to have a policy of trying to influence the politics of other countries like Australia. What hypocrites .

Really they’ve taken over the country bit late now 🙄

Kick all those spies out

And the same will probably happen with Pacific Island Nations with China potentially influencing them now that Scomo stuffed up relations with them over the climate crisis!

Closing the gate after the horse has bolted. Pretty much sums up the LNP too.

one easy way to stop it, stop accepting Chinese students

It’s getting to a very dangerous portion time to expose some of our political leaders for selling their country out

Politicians need to accept the blame for this one. They had no hesitation to sell off our country or lease a major Port to China. What did they think was going to happen? Have they only woken up to this fact just now? auspol ScottMorrisonMP
