If we weren’t so charmed by the behemoth’s first foray into smartwatches, we wouldn’t be so mad about its imperfections.

One might have hoped, in all the years that Google was working on its Pixel Watch, that it would spend that time wisely, bending its considerable will towards the single biggest flaw that has plagued smartwatches since their invention. After all, Google did manage to address the second-biggest issue in the smartwatch world with the Pixel Watch, which finally came out last month after at least four years on the drawing board.

The design reminds me of a watch my father used to wear, or maybe my grandfather and I’m just dying to replace the Apple-style silicone strap that came with it with a stainless-steel band that Google says is coming out soon, to perfect the retro look and feel. And it’s a good thing the design is so appealing on the Pixel Watch because it helps hide a multitude of sins.

Fortunately, though, the domed glass on the Pixel Watch mostly camouflages the oversized bezel, and with the right digital face, one that doesn’t press up against the bezel, the watch gets away with it. The Google Pixel Watch doesn’t have that effect on me. Despite technically being a sports tracker with its heritage firmly in the Fitbit brand that Google acquired in 2021, this smartwatch feels more like a timepiece and less like a nagging repudiation of my indolence. But now I’ve gone and mentioned the Apple Watch Ultra, and I can no longer avoid talking about the elephant in the room: battery life.
