The first hearing into historical gay hate murders from 1970-2010 is underway in NSW. Between 1976 and 2000, there were 88 suspected hate crime deaths across the state, 23 of which specialist police have deemed 'unsolved'. 9News MORE:

ACON, formerly the Aids Council of NSW, considers the number to be closer to 30."All of the deaths with which this inquiry is concerned, many of them lonely and terrifying, were of people whose lives were tragically cut short," senior counsel Peter Gray said as he opened the hearing.Peter Gray delivered the opening address of the special commission of inquiry into LGBTIQ hate crimes."Some of the deaths were obviously murders, others may well have been.

The 18-year-old's body was found by a local fisherman at the base of cliffs between Shelly Beach and North Head, near Manly, at 10am on May 11, 1976. Steve Johnson, the brother of Scott Johnson, looks down to the rocks and ocean below at the point along the cliff at Blue Fish Point.At the time, the 27-year-old's death was ruled a suicide.White has since told an appeals court he intends to withdraw his plea.
