Let them go - they pay no taxes in Australia and have played a huge part of decimating jobs here too. They need to pay their fair share or lose billions in our revenue.

Try BING

Doesn’t it mean bye to Google Classroom, Suite, & all add-ons (+ all Google professional development for teachers) that got many through online learning & that has continued to benefit Aust’s education system FOR FREE? There’s no other free platform that would work as effectively

I stopped using Google search ages ago. I just got tired of all the ads related to whatever I searched. The next step would be to guarantee balanced reporting. But what government would ever want that.

Watching 'the circle' on tv now. It seems all too real. Is it just a coincidence? 🤔

It’s commercial media models that needs overhauling- internet is meant to be open source & media needs to adapt/get on board. Losing google search would be a disaster for biz & education & research. If we lose google search, we will be in the dark.

Don't forget. YOU are the product that Google desires. If they pull services from Oz we must all find another means (Bing, Duckduckgo) but remember THEY lose 25 million 'products' to harvest data from ... until someone else comes along to fill a void!

What the government doing is fucking stupid and make no sense but also I have NO sympathy for multi billion dollar companies that still fuck over millions of people worldwide

use yahoo or bing

Australia is so loyal to the US. In return, Australia is still threatened by a US company. What does it mean for Australia?

All because Murdoc wants to double dip to pay for his dying dinosaur news model. He also wants access to Googles algorithm before they make changes so he can game the system. Google makes constant changes daily sometimes hourly, it's not workable.

MSMWatchdog2013 It actually may be a good thing. The absence of the uber-present Google search engine from EVERY screen in Australia, on Morrison's watch, may actually reach some of the almost comatose QuietAustralians and wake them to a repeated inconvenience. And they may ask 'Why?'

MSMWatchdog2013 It means maybe I don't buy another Google phone

Wonderful news DuckDuckGo Google - Happy to have the bias and shadow censorship removed from Australia!

I haven't been able to access ABC News through Google for several weeks, nor guardiannews - I hope someone sees sense and pulls back from the brink in time, because the big losers will be Australians - especially small businesses.

RBJRON The govt has made another awful decision I'll have to live with the consequences of.

Just saying... this is all over my head. My immediate neighbour and I who are carers of the profoundly intellectually disabled, how on earth can this government take away the only joy in the life of our loved ones, our sanity and theirs via their laptops. For Rupert and Costello

I'm gobsmacked at how many ppl are just fixated on 'how to get along without google' and not asking why govt should do it at all! Why enrich Murdoch/Nine? Not independents? More powerful media empires and weaker independents are a disaster for democracy. MRowlandMP AlboMP

Government should mandate Google be replaced by DuckDuckGo on all federal computers and start an ad campaign to show the general public how to do same. Although Australia is insignificant to Google on a global scale, it would bring attention to others that there are alternatives.

Bye Google.

I hope they do! Google should have pulled their services once the encryption laws were passed, Government's need to know they don't own the internet!

Does anyone really believe that Google will forgo $4B in Australian advertising revenue? Especially when the company only paid $54M (1.35%) in Australian Corporate tax last year?

Happy to say bye bye to Google and other metadata miners.

Hopefully the take the ABC first

The French have chosen to pursue copyright payments. It would be smart if we went with that as well and worked with the French.

Go ahead and do it another will take up the slack very quickly.

I like google search, but there are a few other good search engines available now. Google will be the only loser out of this as why would the government care if people had to use other search engines.... its no skin off their nose really !

ABCscience Monopolies are never a good thing & the 5 or 6 biggest monopolies in the world are TaxHaven Based, that are actually in the USA Apple Microsoft Facebook Amazon Google Uber

VPN!!

Use Duck Duck Go, also Startpage, and Quant for international content.

So is the ABC done with promoting Facebook yet? Put content on the ABC website first.

Whilst there are alternatives to most Google products, Android is the elephant in the room here - if Google pull that, then half the phones in the country become unsupported, and it hands a monopoly to Apple. Also I'm sure people won't be happy if they pull YouTube.

Meh, I don't care, I directly visit the URL's of news sites, I don't need to use Google for that. Browsers have a bookmark function!

ianfmusgrave Google search is absolute garbage now. Full of ads, with too much filtered out. I'd flip them the Aussie bird.

It means using some other search engine. Google shouldn’t let the door hit it in the arse on its way out.

They aren't going to do that.

Absolutely won't happen, call their bluff.

Seeya...

This is a worry. Australia will not be bullied !

More accurate to say it's responding to a threat.

Nice, I've been using duckduckgo for a while and guess what? It offers pretty much same search result but ZERO tracking!

Alternative: Duckduckgo

I've been using Bing now for ages... the loss of Google is actually no loss at all!

Just switch to DuckDuckGo.... open source, no data tracking... you still find what you're searching for...

There are plenty of other search engines apart from Google. The danger for Google is that Australians might now discover this.

Technological blackmail

I doubt they'll pull out forever. $4.3 billion in revenue is a lot to forego considering they wouldn't be have to cut into too much to pay the upfront fees the news orgs would be getting. They're worried about it being a precedent moreso.

Here's the NYT article on this subject.

I hope they do. This whole thing is just a bullshit money making scam for the Murdoch media.

Another disappointing, poorly researched, biased article about Google 🙄

Newscorpse isn’t a media organisation, it’s a conservative propaganda machine. They aren’t worried about loosing money, they are worried about loosing power.

Pull your head in morrison. The net is meant to be free and so arevsearch engines. If news services cant survive without monopolies then boo hoo too bad for them. I will never pay for news.

Don’t forget Google own YouTube.

our government got threatened by a company sigh...

What google is really afraid of is the rest of the world will follow suit. If Australia paves a path the rest may wish to walk on it. & of that, google is truely afraid. It’ll only change the business model, not being down internet search function. Short term-pain long-term gain.

If you would like Josh Frydenburg to control what news articles you see, and pave the way for a more resilient Murdoch, wave Google goodbye and support the legislation

The Australian government is extorting money from tech companies to prop up Murdoch's flailing media organisations. There, fixed it for you.

The news companies can solve their complaints with simple technology, no laws are needed. The government is being stupid for unworthy benefactors. That said, Google's new response is equally stupid. Once I leave their ecosystem I will never return.

To me it's pretty simple, come to an agreement with the ABC and pay them only Australian News because the rest is just Murdoch Muppets that is BS bias news that no one believes anyways. It is to be noted that more people watch Pepper Pig than Paul Murray, just saying.

Sherples listen up ur government wants u 2 pay 4 what u get 4 nothing not only this, control and sensor ur lives without the blame while I believe their should be controls in place this is just a revenue grab which we won't c but most likely pay 4 politicians holidays.

DuckDuckGo is much nicer, it filters out the ads that plague a google search

To every1 that say “there are other search engines”. What will stop this stupid government from doing the same to others. Without Google most businesses will not survive online as that’s their front door. Articles being shown in full then ask for $ otherwise shut-up/appreciate.

For a company that claims it shouldn't be regulated because anyone can compete, they are making a fucking awesome case to be regulated. Also if you're considering Google Cloud or Google Docs for your business, just remember who thinks they are in charge (it ain't you!)

If google have to pay for content they show, can they then not show the content so they dont have to pay? It is their buisness after all. Hmmm could help boycott murdochmedia. Please google do that, remove murdochlies from our lives.

It will be hard for Gladys to search new ways to destroy compromising documents.

I understand it will be difficult to go goggle free. But I am happy to make the change, I don't like being threatened. 👎👎👎

Bye-bye

The news companies should be grateful for Google because without them they'd struggle to get anyone to see the crap they publish.

So Australia with half the population of California takes on a global giant, again!!! And why? Because the world changes and we don’t want the horse n cart media to lose its monopoly!

We'd not just lose a search engine. Youtube Gmail Chromecast Chrome browser Gone. Our government is too stupid to handle IT matters. These laws are an embarrassment.

Lol. How about what it means for you (MSM)? That's where it all started and us Aussies have to pay the 'price'?!

There are plenty of other search engines and we can memorise the news urls. Bring on the experiment. Who needs the Google behemoth? Does that mean my paid Google email system will also be shut down? I’ll leave it if necessary.

This is the work of ScottMorrisonMP and his Hillsong cabinet, trying to cut us off and bring in a Murdoch run Australian media environment. How timely that Murdoch got his recent award. This absolutely stinks of LNP corruption. AlboMP AustralianLabor MurdochRoyalCommission

Quickly, someone develop an entirely Murdoch free search engine and I’ll even pay for it! Aus gov, be careful what you wish for!

pull all google services. it's spyware

Australian owned and designed search engine. Good for Australia

FFS! France has already served them notice with a bill similar to ours. You think Google is going to leave France as well? They’re just being bullies. They’re not going anywhere. Stop enabling them with this stupid type of reporting. ThisisNotJournalism

Last time Morrison said he doesn't respond to threats we lost half our overseas trade....DisasterMan is back at it!!

It won’t happen!

This whole thing is at Murdoch’s instigation. Blame the real criminal

Hahaha. Google having a fit and spitting the dummy. Screw them, make them pay!

Good riddance

Maybe the dickhead australian media should stop trying to charge them for their shitty news reporting

geoffrey_payne Class action time. Its imbedded into android phones

We loose Google, Oz internet will be 10years behind the rest of the world. A huge disadvantage for Oz business.

Google direct traffic to news sites. If they leave, the media organizations will lose out. Less traffic to their sites, will give them less revenue.

Search engines are free for users to make their own choices. Clicking is like buying. No click, no pay. newscorpse missed the tech boat, too bad for them. (We know that why this happening ) “news content” is just advertising space for commercial networks Give me Google anyday

meh let them do it.

I lived in a time before google and internet mobile phones we survived And it was better

it means oz gets to start using a better search engine
