Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates refuses to comment on a ruling handed down by the Office of the Independent Assessor made public this week.

Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates has refused to comment on a ruling handed down by the Councillor Conduct Tribunal and made public this week.

The Office of the Independent Assessor says 30 donations from a campaign fundraising race day — valued at more than $68,000 — were inaccurately described as race tickets on Councillor Gates's register of interests and another donation of $2,500 was not declared within 30 days. A former speaker of the Queensland Parliament, John Mickel, who is now an Adjunct Professor at the Queensland University of Technology said it was a big warning for anyone who wanted to run for local government.

"Modern campaigns cost a lot of money to run and the money is hard to find from a candidate's personal resources," he said."A cap and fully transparent disclosures are needed but I have some issues with [Queensland] laws on [banning] developer contributions," he said.

Zali Steggall $1.1 million in donations leads funding push for climate action candidatesElectoral disclosures for federal independent candidates have revealed big donations for campaigns in support of strong climate change action at the last election. Chicken feed. Let’s talk about Malcolm’s donations. I wonder if the time has come to totally review polictial donations and maybe our system... it seems toxic and lends itself to corruption and favouritism to gain election rather than planned decision making based on good governance science and expertise rather than spin. One of these day's Lefties may even read that 1989 UN Climate Report? but is doubt it.
