Election results are not always easily explained; still, there are two contrasts between Andrews' win and Morrison's loss that are worth dwelling on. | OPINION by mrseankelly

Anthony Albanese will not have to hire a codebreaker to decipher the most important lesson from Dan Andrews’ victory on Saturday. Conveniently, Andrews summarised it that night: “Paul Keating once said to me, ‘Son, leadership is not about doing what is popular; leadership is about doing what is right.’ Essentially, he was telling me that leadership is about doing what matters.”

One thing “it” likely meant was arrogance, an unconcern with accountability. As has been widely noted, under Andrews, power has been centralised, the press treated dismissively. Here, nuance is important. Andrews’ supporters would say, correctly, that much of the press deserves his contempt; but that does not justify everything. They would also point to the 120 consecutive press conferences he held during the pandemic – which was, it’s true, laudable.

Election results are not always easily explained; still, there are two contrasts worth dwelling on. The first is that Andrews centralised power and overrode accountability to get things done. Morrison also centralised power and overrode accountability, but for the opposite reason: to avoid getting things done. The journalist Martin McKenzie-Murrayas “Get it done and let them howl”. Morrison inspired the howling but without the alibi of achievement.

The second theme is Scott Morrison himself: his unnecessary foolishness. This is not a dangerous Liberal Party we are being shown, but merely tired and silly – a little like the Victorian opposition. If these themes persist, Albanese will go into the next election from a similar angle to Andrews.

mrseankelly People are rejecting anyone the likes of, Andrew Bolt, Peta Credlin, Prue MacSween, David Speers, and the Murdoch press supports. It will end your political career if any of the above get behind you.
