The bill will replace the existing Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act to strengthen legal recognition of trans and gender diverse people, as well as recognise same-sex parents.

People undergoing sexual reassignment surgery will no longer be required to change gender markers on birth certificates under legislation introduced to the Queensland parliament.

Same-sex couples will also be able to register as mother/mother or father/father in Queensland for the first time.Conversations with people affected by existing laws revealed a common desire for legal documents to accurately represent identity, Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman said.
