Gary Ablett will not return for Geelong until round 18 after the Queensland Government denies early access to the AFL hub.

Geelong star Gary Ablett will not play until the final round of the AFL season after being denied an exemption to travel to Queensland early.Ablett will return to the AFL hub on September 1 with Richmond star Shane Edwards. The Cats were told Ablett would not be able to enter Queensland before September 1 unless he entered a hard quarantine, meaning he would be unable to train.

Geelong had hoped to bring Ablett up to Queensland earlier, while Richmond was planning on getting Shane Edwards back after he opted out of traveling with the team to stay in Melbourne with his pregnant wife, who has since given birth to a baby girl. However, that plan has now been stymied, meaning Ablett will only be available for the round 18 clash against Sydney, the location of which is yet to be determined.

Instead, Ablett will travel with a larger party on September 1, where he would then complete 14 days of quarantine in the AFL's transition hub., with the club's blessing, to be with his wife and their child Levi, who suffers a rare degenerative disease.
