There was uproar this week as news broke that the AFL would drop the Aboriginal flag from it's Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous round and overnight that uproar turned into action, with several AFL clubs joining the chorus of those who want to 'free the flag'.

“An organisation like the AFL may well be able to accommodate a licensing agreement, but it could further disenfranchise those people who are not in the same position,” she said. "It's symbolic to our people. There's a lot of people who have given rise to that flag, even Elders who aren't with us today," he said.Speaking to the ABC yesterday, the Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ken Wyatt, said he was disappointed the flag would not be on display and said he is exploring what options are available to resolve the situation.

SBS This is just the AFL's deflection of the fact the they will not acknowledge the origin of the game is indigenous. It should be free the game not the flag.

Just pay the money. Good luck reversing a Federal Court decision on ownership.

Why , given the present flag is a relatively recent design, owned by an individual and now a company, dont the Aboriginal community get together as a community and design a new flag, free from copy write, that can be an eternal symbol. Seems obvious.

They can buy the flag, sure. But why should tax payers fork out for it? It’s a civil matter between the copyright owners and the Indigenous people that have appropriated the flag.

Can just one of the news networks actually research and print the facts You can fly the flag. You can’t print it on a shirt without permission. It’s a copyright design and that license has been sold. Standard business practice.

Who is doing the uproar ? Just the SBS ?

More AFL window dressing! And SBS is buying it...goodness gracious me!!

FatherBob Forgive me, an old white woman, but how can the Flag of our Indigenous People be owned by anyone? How could anyone, morally or ethically, *own* the Flag? As a person of Celtic extraction, I would be happier with a change to the national flag, but nobody should *own* the design.

SBS romanmars you need to check out this flag story. Would make great 99% invisible ep.

FFS... buy the rights you losers

WAM also wanted to charge the teams and organisers of the Koori Knock-out to use the flag, all community teams told them to jam it.

Boo bloody hoo. There is already an Australian flag that's free to use.

It’s free already

They can fly the flag, but choose not to. But they can't use it on merchandise without paying a licence fee and that is their gripe

AFL, Sydney Swans condemn racist abuse of Elijah Taylor following COVID hub breachThe AFL and the Swans show their support for the 19-year-old, after he was the target of racist abuse on social media in the wake of his COVID-19 protocol breach. Well it's a possibility telling people relentlessly not to be racist you'll always trigger that small minded group to do the opposite of what you asked them not to do! psychologists might have a word for it! The AFL would’ve advised this 19 year old adult to post a social media statement in an attempt to get support from the community. The AFL are responsible for whatever comments followed. The social media world is not a sanitised domain. Poor advise by AFL.
