ACTU President Michele O’Neil says there are gaping holes in the government’s paid pandemic leave entitlement.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison unveiled a $1500 pandemic leave payment for Victorian workers who would be financially disadvantaged if they were tested for the virus and needed to self-isolate. The Union President said the entitlement should operate under the same system as sick leave, whereby workers were paid at their normal rate and the government reimbursed their employer. Under the current system, she said workers were required to jump through hoops to be eligible for the payment.

“That’s the first problem, the second problem is it doesn’t cover people’s full wages, it’s set at about minimum wage,” she said. “Workers have got to know that if they stop work to get tested, then it won’t have any impact on their pay, that’s the way to make this as strong as possible.” Ms O’Neil also called on the government to reinstate JobKeeper for early childcare workers.
