Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says an announcement about the future of JobSeeker is expected to come from the government this week. The rate of the payment increased during the pandemic to almost double its original amount with calls for it to remain at similar levels.
“I tipped yesterday it would be less than the coronavirus supplement but be greater than the old rate,” Mr Clennell said. Mr Clennell also indicated the rate may not significantly increase. “But I do not expect a big rise in the payment because several ministers have told me that to have JobSeeker at its current level is a disincentive to people going to work."

JobSeeker is ‘not supposed to be a living wage’: Peta Credlin | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Peta Credlin says while the government is focusing on the increase of JobSeeker by $50 a fortnight, “predictably” the welfare lobby is focussing on the cut from mid-pandemic levels.\n\nThe Morrison government announced on Tuesday it would raise the rate of JobSeeker by an extra $50 a fortnight after it slashed the rate which had been doubled to $1100 due to the pandemic.\n\nThe $50 fortnightly increase is expected to cost the taxpayer $9 billion over four years, and it brings the welfare rate to 40 per cent of minimum wage.\n\n“Predictably of course, while the government's focussing on the increase, the welfare lobby is focussing on the cut,” Ms Credlin said.\n\n“Let's never forget the dole is not supposed to be a ‘living wage’. The 'minimum wage' is meant to be a living wage but the dole's purpose is as an income supplement to tide us over between jobs.\n\n“This is where the welfare lobby gets it badly wrong. No one who is capable of work should expect to live off the taxpayer. \n\n“All anyone capable of working should expect from the taxpayer is a hand up, not a handout.”\n What happens in a cycle of poverty i hear the empathetic people at Sky News ask. This is what happens: People lose the ability to get to work. They lose the ability to pay for car rego. Or buy a $500 car. So they go to Aldi and buy a $5 bottle of port, costing the gov more. Deloitte and PwC both recommended $75-$100 per week, It was a couple of years ago - it would cost $3-4bn but ADD $4-5bn to the economy At $3.60 per day its not going to be a vote winner. As regards taxes, News Corp do not pay any local Aussie taxes, about time they did.
