He was jailed after selling drugs at underage dance parties. Now, reformed prisoner Joe Kwon is mentoring young people in juvenile detention with the aim of keeping them from reoffending | juliepower

It was November 28, 2007 and then 21-year-old drug dealer Joe Kwon was enjoying the view of Sydney Harbour while he waited for a big breakfast with a large orange juice to be delivered by the Shangri-La Hotel’s room service.

Mr Kwon was sentenced to 13 years for criminal enterprise. Last month, he finished four years of parole after serving nine years in jails across NSW. The program combines a nine-week program in custody – focusing on exercise, building self-esteem and preparation for employment and education – with a further 12 months of mentoring in the community.April Long, the acting chief executive of Shine for Kids, said the grant meant that “eighty incarcerated young people will now have someone walk beside them, believe in them and stand up for them”.

Kwon said young offenders “line up to come to our program because training is straight out of prison. The boys love that it is prison training, but we’re not there to promote prison, we are there to promote why they shouldn’t go to prison. But it is a good catch for them to get interested first.”
