“Racist” is a powerful accusation to make against anyone, but since the Christchurch terrorist attack it has been frequently applied to Australia’s political mainstream. Hardly a day goes by without talk of our nation’s entrenched racism and how it fuels Islamophobia and extreme right-wing violence.
For all our nation’s historic blemishes, and notwithstanding the pockets of xenophobia, we are a broadly liberal and tolerant multi-racial, multi-ethnic society. And it has been that way for the best part of half a century since both major parties chipped away at the great white walls of White Australia and moved quickly to enshrine the multicultural ideal as the basis of national community.
'Racist' is a term that has been denuded beyond salvage.
Indigenous Australians experience racism & disadvantage in education, employment, health & justice systems. In the past 5 years, 1 in every 4 Australian children who died by suicide was Indigenous. Intergenerational trauma from colonisation & genocide, stolen generations, racism.
32% of respondents to a survey by Western Sydney Uni had “negative” feelings towards Muslim Australians. 22% said they had “negative” feelings towards Australians of Middle-Eastern heritage. 1 in 5 respondents had experienced racism in the last 12 months
We have white supremacists in our national parliament.
Funny how minority groups complain about racism then tell you how superior their culture is to western culture. And they're the ones who call it 'trash white culture'. You don't have to be a white supremacist (but will get called one) to see how that reeks of racist hypocrisy.
