Giants captain Kim Green announcing her retirement has provided a new twist to a final round of Super Netball that already has plenty of sting | LizzyLegsEllis

With the Giants and Magpies locked in a fierce battle for the one remaining finals spot, this weekend was always going to be massive, and the impending retirement of one of the club's – and sport's – greats could very well be enough to spur the Sydney team on and keep their season alive.

My most vivid memory of Kim was the first time I saw her at on-court training. She had been impressive in pre-season fitness training, especially her strength and speed. But the real revelation came the first time I saw her with a ball in her hand. I had never seen a kid that young who could play that well.It was 2004 and after winning our first ever national league title with the Swifts in 2001, we were looking to change up our routines to try to win another title.

I was blown away that this 17-year-old kid could come in and win a national league title at her first attempt. I remember telling her that these types of wins are so rare that you have to savour them. I was 28 when I won my first national title, and 31 when I won my second, so I was speaking from bitter experience. Little was I to know that this wunderkind would win three more titles with the Swifts in the next four years.
